With Scotland come the images of green meadows

With Scotland come the images of green meadows, hills and picturesque highlands. The highland in itself is the largest administrative region in the country and we know more about this place with the world-famous traditional attire known as highland dress. It is also the national dress of Scotland and features the tartan. It is still in place as modified forms of highland dress in the modern apparel market.  The design might be given to the gown, shirt, skirt, wrap-around or even the headpiece.

Highland dress for men

It is characterised by a kilt or trews specific to the tartan of the clan. The tartan may be fully plaid, fly plaid or done with a belted plaid that is short. Full plaid is very long and pleated from top to bottom and its length will be almost twice the length of the person wearing it. Its color usually matches that of the tartan.  Fly plaid is pleated for half of its length and is tucked in at the waist. Belted plaid is more like a blanket worn loosely around the body. The tartan is accessorised with a belt, knee-socks, cuff, pouch called sporran, and knife with single edge known as sgian-dubh. Other accessories that you can get from any official site describing the full attire include garters to keep the stockings up in place, clan badges and pins for kilts.

Highland dress for woman

The tartan dress of woman varies depending on whether she is married or unmarried. If unmarried, it depends on the clan tartan of her birth clan and if married it depends on the clan of her husband. The traditional way of wearing tartan is with a skirt reaching up to the ankles. The women also wear a blouse and vest of matching colour or patterns. The kilt is not worn and instead, they wear small shawls known as sash or tonnag. The shawl is pinned with the decorative pin called brooch. Women will also wear clan badge or any other embellishment as a symbol of their culture or family.

To remain true to the tradition, the entire outfit is a difficult one to complete, especially the accessories. Wearing kilt poses the biggest task and might need some practise before wearing out . The knee-length tartans of women have evolved with time and are now in the form of mini-skirts also. With time, even men’s attires have found transformation into casual and semi-casual wears with tartans as the backdrop of design.
